Everything you need to choose, style, size, and care for Zuri Styles' handmade paper bead jewelry, beaded earrings, leather-accented clutches, totes, and wallets - every piece made by hand by women artisans in Uganda.
Every piece in the Zuri Styles collection starts the same way: in the hands of a Ugandan woman, with a material that most people would throw away. Strips of recycled paper become beads. Offcuts of vibrant cotton become the front of a clutch. A few yards of thread become a pair of earrings light enough to forget you're wearing.
This guide is the one we wish existed when we first started shopping handmade - a single place to understand what each category is actually made from, how it's meant to be worn, how to size and care for it, and which piece fits which occasion. Whether you're buying your first paper bead bracelet or building out a full collection, you'll find the specifics here.
Every paper bead is rolled by hand. Every clutch is cut and stitched by hand. There's no factory line behind any of it - which means two pieces in the same style will never be perfectly identical, and that's the point, not a flaw.
Zuri Styles' collection spans six core categories. Here's what each one is made from, what it typically costs, and who it's best for - so you can jump straight to the section that matters most to you.
| Category | What it's made from | Typical price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper bead bracelets | Hand-rolled beads made from recycled paper, strung on elastic cord | $8.50–$25 | Everyday stacking, eco-conscious gifting, first-time buyers |
| Choker bracelets | Long, slim hand-rolled paper beads paired with coordinating metal or glass beads | $14–$30 | A bolder single statement piece, layered wrist stacks |
| Beaded, tassel & thread earrings | Glass and seed beads, wrapped thread, leather or metal tassels | Roughly $15–$39, ultra-lightweight (under 0.03 lb) | Everyday wear and dressing up the same outfit for evening |
| Clutch bags | 100% cotton African print or canvas exterior, genuine leather corners and a leather tassel zipper pull | $55.99–$79.99 (leather); lower for fabric-only wristlets | Evenings out, weddings, milestone gifts |
| Tote bags | Vibrant African print fabric exterior with a handwoven fabric strap | Everyday-gift price range | Daily carry - school runs, errands, the gym, the market |
| Wallets | Colorful African print fabric, sized for cards and cash | Everyday-gift price range | Practical add-on gifts, pairing with a tote or clutch |
"Handmade" describes a process, not just a label. Here's what's actually happening with the materials behind each Zuri Styles category - and why it matters for how the piece looks, feels, and lasts.

Paper bead jewelry is a craft technique used across East Africa: strips of recycled paper are rolled tightly by hand around a thin rod, then sealed, which is what gives the finished bead its surprising weight and durability for something made out of paper. Every Zuri Styles paper bead bracelet, choker, and necklace follows this same hand-rolled process, which is part of why no two pieces in the same colorway are ever perfectly identical.
Because each bead starts as waste paper rather than mined or manufactured material, this category is the most genuinely eco-friendly corner of the collection - and usually the most affordable place to start.

The bold, saturated prints you'll see across Zuri's bags and wallets are 100% cotton African fabric - the same vibrant wax-print textile tradition used widely across East African fashion. On the clutches specifically, this fabric forms the exterior body of the bag and the matching wristlet strap, paired with a cotton inner lining.
This is also the fabric used for the Zuri totes, where it's combined with a handwoven fabric strap roughly 40 inches long - long enough to wear comfortably over the shoulder.

On the leather wristlet clutches, genuine leather is used at the corners or base of the bag and as the zipper-pull tassel (roughly 5 inches long), paired with a metal YKK zipper. This is what separates the leather clutch line from the lower-priced, fabric-only wristlets - the leather adds structure at the stress points and a tassel detail that's become one of the most recognizable features of the line.

The earring line is the most material-varied category in the collection. Some styles use small glass or seed beads strung in patterns; others use tightly wrapped thread for a more textured, woven look; tassel styles add a fringe of thread or leather beneath the beadwork. Across all of them, the finished earring is intentionally ultra-lightweight - most pieces weigh well under an ounce - so they're comfortable for all-day wear, not just special occasions.
Handmade pieces tend to look best worn the way they were designed to be worn - with a little color, a little texture, and not too much matching. Here's how to wear each category.
- Wear 3–5 together on one wrist for a stacked, colorful look rather than one alone
- Mix colorways - the beads are designed to be paired, not matched exactly
- Perfectly suited to jeans and a t-shirt, not just dressed-up occasions
- Leave the other wrist bare, or balance it with a single choker bracelet
- Wear solo on one wrist as a slim, eye-catching statement piece
- The metal or glass accent beads tend to pick up whatever metal tone you're already wearing - match it to your watch or rings
- Works well layered just above or below a paper bead stack on the same arm
- Simple beaded studs or small drops work for everyday and office wear
- Tassel and longer thread-wrapped styles are the easiest way to dress up the same daytime outfit for evening
- Because they're so lightweight, they pair well with a statement necklace without feeling heavy
- Leather-and-fabric wristlet clutches are built for evenings out, dinners, and weddings
- Lighter fabric-only wristlets are better suited to errands and daytime outings
- Let the print be the statement - pair with solid-colored outfits rather than competing patterns
Totes and wallets are the easiest pieces to style because they're meant to be functional first: pick the print you're drawn to and treat it as a neutral. The vibrant fabric does the work, so the rest of your outfit doesn't need to.
Because every piece is handmade, small variations in size and color are normal - but here's what to expect, and how to keep each category looking its best for years.
| Category | Sizing & fit | How to care for it |
|---|---|---|
| Paper bead bracelets & chokers | Elastic cord stretches to fit most adult wrists | Spot clean only with a clean, dry cloth - avoid soaking, since the beads are paper-based |
| Earrings | Lightweight, under 0.03 lb per pair; standard fishhook or post backings | Wipe with a dry cloth; remove before swimming or showering to protect thread and beadwork |
| Leather wristlet clutches | Measures approximately 7" H x 11.5" W | Spot clean the fabric only using a clean, dry cloth; condition the leather periodically with leather oil |
| Fabric wristlet clutches | Measures approximately 7.5" H x 9.5" W | Wipe clean with a dry cloth; do not machine or hand wash |
| Tote bags | Measures approximately 13.5" H x 13.5" W, with a roughly 40" handwoven strap | Hand wash or machine wash whenever needed |
| Wallets | Compact, sized for cards and cash | Wipe clean with a dry cloth |
Handmade jewelry is one of the easiest gifts to get right, because it reads as thoughtful at almost any price point. Here's how to shop by budget.
Zuri Styles began in 2010, when a single mother in Uganda - raising two small children in a garage with a dirt floor - approached our founder with a bundle of handmade jewelry and asked for help selling it. That partnership, built on returning the proceeds directly to the woman who made each piece, became the model the whole brand is still built on today.
That same woman has since moved out of the garage and built a house of her own. Today, she trains and equips other vulnerable women in Uganda with the same skills that changed her life - which is the real reason every piece in this collection looks the way it does. The slight irregularity in a hand-rolled paper bead, the individual stitching on a clutch, the fact that no two pieces in the same style are ever quite identical - none of that is a manufacturing limitation. It's evidence of a person, not a machine, behind the piece in your hands.
Anna is the oldest of four children. Her mother struggled to cover her school fees, so Anna began making simple paper bead bracelets to help pay for her own education. She dreams of becoming a fashion designer or a lawyer - and the bracelets in the Simple Paper Bracelets collection are tied directly to keeping her, and girls like her, in school.
For the full story of why this model exists, and the broader picture of vulnerability and trafficking risk in Uganda that Zuri Styles was built to address, see our companion guide linked below. This pillar focuses on the products themselves - but the mission is never far from the materials.
